- Victor Marquez
Mario is not just the general mascot of Nintendo but one of the highest-selling franchises in the world.
Today, Nintendo owns more than 200 games under the title Super Mario and has sold over 222 million units across all platforms.
So, how did Nintendo come up with Mario, and what are the different super Mario games?
Quick Summary
In this post, we will go over:
- History of Mario
- Super Mario Games
So, without further ado, let’s get started.
History of Mario
The famous video game character Mario came about in 1981. He was originally known as Mr. Video and then Jumpman. He made his first appearance as a carpenter in the first Nintendo arcade game Donkey Kong.
The same year Nintendo America named him Mario after Nintendo America’s landlord Mario Segale. But, he was originally created by Shigeru, a Japanese video game designer.
Two years later, we made the hero of a game we all loved and played, Mario Bros.
In Mario Bros, we know him as a plumber who fought enemies in New York alongside his brother Luigi.
After the success of Mario Bros, Nintendo released Super Mario Bros, which fueled the release of Nintendo’s first console, the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Ever since then, Mario has been the mascot marketing tool for Nintendo.
Over the years, you might have seen Mario work in many professions. He’s been a doctor, painter, and tennis referee. But, what we love the most is Mario as a racer in Mario Kart.
Currently, Mario holds the record for the most sold video game in history.

Mario Games
Super Mario Bros
As we mentioned before, Super Mario Bros was the second game that introduced Mario as the main character.
However, it was the first game that revealed the main universe of Mario, the Mushroom Kingdom.
If you’ve played the game before, you’ll also notice that it is very similar to The Legend of Zelda. This is because both these games are directed by Miyamoto for Japan’s exclusive Famicom Disk System.
Moreover, the game has 8 worlds that you can play in four stages.
The Mario Kart Series
The Mario Series is one of the most loved games on Nintendo Switch. This is because you can play it with your friends in multiplayer mode.
There are also other characters you can choose such as Princess Peach, Luigi, Donkey Kong, Bowser, and more. Furthermore, Super Mario Kart is considered the first game in this series.
Other games in the series are:
- Mario Kart 64
- Mario Kart: Super Circuit
- Mario Kart: Double Dash
- Mario Kart DS
- Mario Kart Arcade GP
Super Mario Run
This was the first mobile game for Mario that was designed for iOS. So, if you don’t own a Nintendo console, this game is a great introduction to the world of Mario.
Gameplay-wise, it’s very similar to Temple Run. It has two modes and 24 levels that you can play. Moreover, you can also compete with other players online to outscore them.
Conclusion
Besides the games we mentioned, there are also hundreds of other Mario games that you play.
Other than games, Mario has also been featured on various merchandising products, including shirts, keychains, lunchboxes, mugs, and much more.
We’ve also written posts about other famous games like Metal Gear Solid and Minecraft that you can access here and here respectively.
